Seed processing refers to the series of operations that prepare harvested seeds for safe storage, planting, and distribution. The first major step is cleaning, where unwanted materials such as dust, chaff, stones, and broken seeds are removed. This is often done using air screens, sieves, and gravity separators. Cleaning ensures that only healthy and usable seeds move forward in the process. After cleaning, drying is carried out to reduce moisture content. Proper drying is essential because excess moisture can lead to fungal growth and reduce seed viability during storage.

Grading follows, where seeds are sorted based on size, weight, and shape. Uniform grading helps in achieving consistent planting depth and spacing in the field, which ultimately supports better crop establishment. Another important stage is seed treatment, where seeds are coated with protective chemical or biological agents to prevent diseases and pest attacks during early growth stages.
